Skaden skulle komme til å plage henne resten av livet</ins>, og i <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">perioder hadde hun så vondt at hun ikke kunne arbeide som lærer</ins>. <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">I disse periodene tok hun også opp granskerarbeidet, </ins>hun <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">reiste rundt </ins>i <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">Norge og dokumenterte gamle gjenstander, arbeidsmetoder og håndarbeidsteknikker. Et brev fra 1987 viser at Grostøl til sammen gjennom årene fikk tildelt 10 000 kroner fra Bankier Ad. Lindbäcks fond som ble forvaltet av SNV.&lt;ref&gt;Brev til Torbjørg Gauslaa 1. september 1987&lt;/ref&gt; Når hun hadde mulighet filmet også Grostøl det hun fikk demonstrert. Og hun var interessert i det meste. Hun dokumenterte både manns- og kvinnearbeid, metoder som fortsatt var i bruk og metoder som var gått ut </ins>av <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">bruk, men som noen fortsatt husket. Hun var interessert i hvordan folk bodde, hvordan de laget gjenstander og hva de </ins>brukte <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">i produksjonen, hvordan folk hadde kledd seg og hvordan tekstilene ble produsert. Det resulterte i mange små filmsnutter som oftest noen få minutter lange, hvor folk viser gamle arbeidsmetoder. Noen av filmene hennes viser også mennesker som demonstrerer arbeidsmetoder som har gått ut av bruk, men som ikke var glemt, dette er metoder vi kunne visst lite eller ingenting om nå, om det ikke hadde vært for Grostøls innsats. En av filmene man regner med er en rekonstruksjon er filmen hvor det demonstreres arbeid på åkeren med et barn i fatle. I “Kvelds-seto. Gåmålt frå Skjåk” står det i en tekst av Torbjørg Gauslaa: “Skjåk står i ei særstilling avdi Anna Grostøl her har gjeve oss mange opplysningar. Ho sikra arbeidsmåten for ettertida då ho i 1941 gjorde filmopptak av ramslått, utført av Guro Breiskriden (1860-1945) (…) Filmopptaka med Guro Breidskriden vart gjort i 1941. Anna Grostøl hadde vore i Skjåk i 1930, og etter at ho fekk seg filmapparat kom ho attende i 1941. Og i tillegg reiste hun mye ellers, noe som har ført til at dokumentasjonsarbeidet hennes har ganske stor geografisk spredning. Hun dokumenterte mye i hjemfylket [[Vest-Agder]], men hun reiste også blant annet i [[Aust-Agder]], [[Telemark]], [[Gudbrandsdalen]], [[Sør-Trøndelag]], [[Troms fylke|Troms]] og [[Finnmark fylke|Finnmark]]. I Troms dokumenterte hun [[Oppstadvev|oppstadveven]], den opprettstående vevstolen, som fortsatt var en levende tradisjon i den samiske kulturen. Dette er en svært gammel form for vevstol, og de fleste steder ellers i verden var den gått ut av bruk. Hun ønsket å reise nordover allerede under krigen, og deretter rett etter krigen, men måtte vente til 1947. Krigen hadde ødelagt veiforbindelsene </ins>og <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">vevstolene var nedbrent, derfor tok det tid før reisen kunne gjennomføres. Torbjørg Gauslaa beskrev det omfattende forberedelsesarbeidet med filmen &#039;&#039;Grene-vev&#039;&#039;: “For eit tjug år sidan hadde Anna Grostøl kome etter, at nord </ins>i <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">Troms vov dei enno eit slag teppevev </ins>på <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">same måten som dei truleg hadde gjort for over tusen år sidan. Dei kalla det “grænevev”, og det slag teppevev hadde flyttsamane brukt til teltduk, sengklæde, og anna, så lenge ein visste til. I 1943 søkte ho Bondeungdomslaget i Tromsø om hjelp til </ins>å <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">koma nord og freista få greie på denne vevemåten. Ho hadde vener der nord som hjelpte henne, og ho fekk tre tusen kroner. Men i slutten av krigstida vart alt avsvidd i dei traktene der dei ennå kunne den gamle vevemåten og ikkje før i 1947 kunne ho </ins>reise <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">nord med oppdraget sitt. Det var uråd å få losji før. Men då fekk samband med ei ung kvinne som kunne denne vevinga, og så fekk ho filma heile framgangsmåten med renning og veving og alt som høyrde til. Men ho laut til Troms fleire vender. Ho var der i 1948, i 49, </ins>i <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">50 og </ins>i <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">55. M.a. måtte ho dit vinters tid så ho kunne få sjå og filma græneveven i bruk hjå flyttsamane, og det gjorde ho i 1955, i april-mai i Finnmark” (1989). Grostøl tilbrakte flere måneder i [[Manndalen]] i Troms, og resultatet av det lange oppholdet var blant filmer som vises hvordan kommager ble laget og dokumentarfilmen, &#039;&#039;Grene-vev.&#039;&#039; Denne filmen ble senere vist offentlig i mange sammenhenger. I Husflidsforbundets særtrykk fra 1952 beskrev Grostøl litt av filmingen: “Veret var grått, fyrste dagen hos vevaren, lite lys til filming inne. Derfor sat ho mykje ute og stelte veven til, den unge kona som så fint synte kunst frå farne ættleder. Folk der sa at aldri hadde vev kome opp under berr himmel, men vi hadde lukka med, den fyrste juli-veka i 1947. Sol og sommervarme kom. Randi Andersen heiter kona. Denne vevforma som det var slutt med for nær hundre år sida, landet over, fann ho livs levande og i full bruk i Kåfjord i Lyngen. Som granskar vart ho straks klår over verdet av dette som filmstoff. Hennar film av grenevevinga var den første. Seinare har både andre nordmenn og finnar vore frampå.” Til tross for sitt engasjement var Anna Grostøl aldri ansatt ved noen kulturhistorisk institusjon, </ins>hele <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">hennes yrkesaktive liv var det lærerjobben som ga henne inntekter. Stort sett alle utgifter knyttet til granskerarbeidet betalte hun av egen lomme, selv om hun mottok flere stipender og hele tiden hadde støtte fra foreldre og søsken. Det kan kanskje ha vært en styrke i arbeidet hennes, siden ingen la føringer for hvor hun skulle reise eller hva hun skulle granske. Svært lite av Grostøls arbeid er publisert, kun noen kortere tekster om drakt og tekstilt arbeid er utkommet som særtrykk, i tillegg skrev hun noen mindre artikler i aviser og tidsskifter, men materialet som finnes hos [[Norsk Folkemuseum]], [[Åseral kommune]], [[Norges arktiske universitetsmuseum]] og [[Nord-Troms museum]] er tilgjengelig </ins>for <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">de som ønsker </ins>å <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">bruke det i for eksempel forskning. Grostøls dokumentasjonsarbeid gir oss verdifull kunnskap om teknikker </ins>og <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">arbeidsmetoder i det </ins>gamle <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">bondesamfunnet, hvor mange av dem ellers ville vært tapt. Tidligere konservator ved museet, Marta Hoffmann (1913-2001), som selv laget filmer i samme sjanger, skal ha ment at Anna Grostøls filmer hadde stor kulturhistorisk verdi. Samlingen ble gitt videre til Norsk Folkemuseum hvor den er den dag i dag. Mange av Grostøls filmer finnes i dag bevart hos Norsk Folkemuseum. Også til Tromsø Museum donerte familien Grostøl det som fantes igjen av Anna Grostøls arbeid </ins>fra <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">Nord-Norge, også det inneholdt filmmateriale. Nasjonalbiblioteket har i dag digitalisert fire filmer laget av Anna Grostøl fra samlingen til Tromsø Museum. Det komplette omfanget av filmarbeidet hennes kjennes ikke.
