Det bur drygt 680 menneske der (2018). Aurdal ligg ved [[E16]] mellom [[Leira]] og [[Bagn]], kring 13,5 kilometer søraust for [[Fagernes]].<br /> <br /> Stadnamnet er truleg samansett av &#039;&#039;aurr&#039;&#039; og &#039;&#039;dalr&#039;&#039;. &#039;&#039;Aurr&#039;&#039; har fleire tydingar, men i dette høvet er det nok &#039;grus&#039; eller &#039;væske&#039; som er det rette, og at det er elva [[Begna]] eller elvegrusen langs ho det viser til.<br /> <br /> Fram til 1805 var staden sentrum for [[Aurdal prestegjeld]], med [[Aurdal kyrkje]] frå 1737 som hovedkyrkje. Nær tettstaden finn ein òg [[Aurdal fjellkyrkje]]. <br /> <br /> Frå 1906 til 1988 var det persontrafikk på [[Valdresbanen]] til [[Aurdal stasjon]].
