Han var sønn av kjøpmann Søren Lexow og Anne Marie Børresen, og var gift med Louise Bull Heiberg (1816-1881). Lexow ble cand. theol. i 1840, og var deretter lærer ved Strømsø og Tangens borgerskole i Drammen i 17 år. I 1859 ble han sogneprest i [[Hjartdal kommune]], hvor han var i nærmere 15 år. Familien bodde på den da nye prestegården i Sauland i Hjartdal, som de første. I 1874 ble Lexow sogneprest i [[Drøbak]], som ble hans siste tjenestested.
