I følge gravminnet er han født 23. desember 1792, død 16. september 1874. I følge Norsk biografisk leksikon er han født 13. desember 1792, og død 15. september 1874. Schou var født i Christiania som sønn av overtollbetjent Didrik Hansen Schou (1744-95) og Anna Ludovica Wittrog (død 1839), og ble gift i 1822 med Birgitte Halvordine Ramm (1796-1877). Han var far til [[Halvor Schou (1823–79)]]. Schou tok handelsborgerskap i Christiania i 1822 og opparbeidet en bondehandel på Grønland like ved Vaterlands bro. Han drev også en eddikfabrikk, et brennevinsbrenneri og en vattfabrikk. I 1834 kjøpte han Sinsen gård av staten. Schou ble medlem av det første formannskapet i Christiania i 1837, men måtte i 1838 oppgi alle kommunale tillitsverv, da han hadde overtatt Lakkegården i Aker etter sin svigerfar og flyttet ut av byen. I 1837 kjøpte han Jørgen Youngs bryggeri i Fjerdingen, som ble til [[Schous bryggeri]]. Året 1821 ble satt som oppstartsåret for Youngs bryggeri, og det ble senere også brukt som oppstartsår for Schous bryggeri, som fram til nedleggelsen i 1981 ble markedsført som landets eldste. Da Schou døde ble virksomheten fortsatt av hans sønn og sønnesønn inntil bryggeriet ble solgt ut av familien i 1898. Det ble da overtatt av [[Hugo Wetlesen]] og [[Hans von der Planitz]]. Bryggeriet samarbeidet fra 1961 med Frydenlunds Bryggeri (fusjonert 1977) og ble nedlagt i 1981. Christian Schou har gitt navn til [[Christian Schous vei]] og [[Schous plass]] i Oslo.
