Martens ble cand. med. i mars 1849. I 1852 bosatte han seg i fødebyen Bergen, hvor han i 1854 ble korpslege og i 1869 brigadelege i Bergenske brigade. I 1877 fratrådte han denne stillingen, da han ble utnevnt til garnisonerende korpslege i Kristiania.. I 1889 ble Martens kaptein i armeens sanitet og major i armeens legeetat, samt beordret til overlege ved garnisonssykehuset. I 1890 ble han utnevnt til major i armeens sanitet, og brigadelege i 2. Akerhusske brigades distrikt. Han fratrådte for aldersgrensen fra denne stillingen i 1898.
