Brannstasjonen ble anlagt sammen med et [[Gjøvik vannverk|vannverk]], og medvitende plassert nær bygrensa mellom Gjøvik og Vardal. Det ble særlig i tilstøtende områder i daværende [[Vardal kommune]] bygd ut mange boliger i etterkrigsårene.<br /> <br /> En utredning i 2002 fastslo at rehabilitering av brannstasjonen var dyrt, og ikke kostnadssvarende, men at den sentrumsnære tomta var meget attraktiv og kunne selges til utviklere. I 2005 kjøpte Gjøvik kommune tomta [[Stampevegen (Gjøvik)|Stampevegen]] 5 av [[Mjøskraft]], «forutsatt at kostnadene bl.a. skulle finansieres ved salg av dagens brannstasjon i Marcus Thranes gate 2».
