Det har også hett Holtålen prestegjeld, som er navneformen som blir brukt for [[Holtålen kommune]]. Prestegjeldet ble oppretta i [[middelalderen]], og en kilde fra 1589 forteller at det da var tre sokn: [[Haltdalen sokn|Haltdalen hovedsokn]], [[Ålen sokn|Ålen anneks]] og [[Singsås sokn|Singsås anneks]]. Hovedkirken var opprinnelig [[Haltdalen stavkirke]], og fra 1880-åra [[Haltdalen kirke]]. Prestegjeldet tilhørte [[Gauldal prosti]] i [[Nidaros bispedømme]].<br /> <br /> I 1650 ble [[Røros sokn]] utskilt fra hovedsoknet. Det ble da bestemt av soknepresten skulle bo på Røros. I 1662 ble soknet utskilt som [[Røros prestegjeld]]. I 1753 ble fjorten gårder i Singsås sokn utskilt som [[Budal sokn]] i [[Støren prestegjeld]]. [[Sørløkken (Singsås)|Sørløkken]] ble overført fra Singsås til Budal i 1848. [[Nordre Tyvoll]] ble overført fra Ålen sokn til Røros prestegjeld i 1874.
