Gift med Martha Vartdal. Lærte fotografering i U.S A. og drev egen forretning der i 8 år. Vendte hjem til Norge i 1892 og reiste da rundt på bygdene &quot;med utstyret på ryggen&quot;. Startet firma i Volda i 1898, hvor han bygde et lite atelier. I 25 år var han fotograf i Volda. Dro til Ålesund etter brannen i 1904 og fotograferte byen mens det ennå var røk fra brannruinene. Fotograferte i Molde under kroningsferden i 1906. I 1924 ble ateliet overtatt av sønnen Johan Magnus N. Arkivet hans gikk tapt i en flom, men mye av det eldste atelierinventaret oppbevares av sønnesønnen, Jostein Nerbøvik. Jostein Nerbøvik f. 1938 gav i 2001 ut boka &quot;Løyndom og røyndom. To fotografar i Volda 1898-1979&quot;, en bok om sin far og farfars virksomhet som bygdefotografer i Voldasamfunnet. Boken inneholder ca. 500 bilder av far og sønn Nerbøvik og utgjør bind 3 i serien &quot;Volda-soga 1800-1945&quot;.
