Han ble ikke gift sjøl.<br /> <br /> Ascanius ble student i [[Trondheim]] i 1742, og tok baccalaureatgrad i 1747. Han tok så en studiereise i utlandet. I 1759 ble han professor i zoologi og mineralogi. Fra 1768 til 1779 gjennomførte han en undersøkelse av Norges kyst. <br /> <br /> I 1771 ble han assessor ved Overbergamtet, et embete han hadde til 1776.
