Han går frå [[Kristiansand]] i [[Vest-Agder]], gjennom Setesdal i [[Aust-Agder]] og opp til [[Haukeligrend]] i [[Telemark]] der han møter [[Europaveg 134]]. Sidan 2003 har RV9 vore [[stamveg]]. Han er 235,7&amp;nbsp;km lang. Av dette ligg 45,1&amp;nbsp;km i Vest-Agder, 175&amp;nbsp;km i Aust-Agder og 15,6&amp;nbsp;km i Telemark.<br /> <br /> Starten på veganlegget var postvegen som ble lagt frå sør i 1840, og som gjekk fram til [[Valle (bygd)|Valle]]. Frå 1867 til 1879 vart vegen ført vidare til [[Bykle|Bykle kyrkjebygd]]. I 1936 nådde han så [[Bjåen (grend)|Bjåen]] om lag tre mil nord for Bykle kyrkje, og etter [[andre verdskrig]] vart det siste stykket mot [[Grungedal]] lagt.<br /> <br /> Då vegen vart lagt var det særlig to stader der ein støtte på store problem. Det verste var ved [[Fånekleivi]] aust for [[Byglandsfjorden]]. Der er vegen no ført gjennom fjellet i den 611 meter lange [[Fånefjellstunnelen]]. Ved [[Byklestigen]] var det også store problem. Den gamle kløvvegen klamrar seg til fjellsida, og her var det ikkje lett å legge ein ny veg. I dag går vegen i tunnel også her.<br /> <br /> Riksveg 9 har vorte utbedre ei rekkje gonger. Det er eit uttalt mål for Setesdalskommunane å få gul midtstripe heilt til [[Hovden (Bykle)|Hovden]]. I dag er delar av vegen for smal til at det er midtstripe.
