McNeil Island, Washington

March 2, 1930

Mr. Carl G. O. Hanson,

c/o Minneapolis Tidende,

307 South Sixth Street,

Minneapolis, Minn.

Dear Sir:

This letter is written at the request of Conrad Christianson,

our register number 6035, whose application for parole received favor-

able action at the regular January, 1930 meeting of the Board of Parole

for this institution, and which is subject to the approval of the

Attorney General at Washington, D.C. His parole period will extend

from date of release until August 13, 1933, or in case he were to pay

his fine, his short term would expire thirty days sooner.

Before he can be released on parole, it will be necessary

for him to have someone, not a relative, to serve as his first friend

during his parole period, and too, he must have employment. He requests

that you serve as his first friend, and if possible, try and secure

employment for him. I am therefore, enclosing a set of first friend

statements which, if you are willing, kindly fill out and sign; have

them certified by a Superior Court Judge; have the Clerk of the Court

affix the Seal of the Court to that part of the statements titled

Certificate and return both copies to this office at an early date.

The duties of a first friend are; to see that the parolee is steadily

employed while on parole; to certify to the correctness of the monthly

reports which the parolee is required to make, while on parole, and to

notify the Warden or the Parole Officer of any violation of the condit-

ions of his parole. There are no liabilities connected with the duties

of a first friend, it is merely a moral obligation to assist the parolee

in rehabilitation.

As to employment, it will be necessary for the prospective

employer to address a letter to the Board of Parole, United States

Penitentiary, McNeil Island, Washington, stating that he will furnish

Christianson with employment, and being sure to state the nature of

the work and the amount of salary to be paid. This letter must be

separate from the first friend statement, however it may be from the

first friend himself. Trusting to hear from you favorably, and assur-

ing you that Christianson will deeply appreciate anything you may be

able to do for him. The above papers should all be sent to this office.

Yours very truly,

John J. Hopkins [signatur]

John J. Hopkins, Parole Officer.
