Mr. Carl O. G. Hanson,
Editor Minneapolis Tidende,
Dear Mr. Hanson,- I certainly appreciate most highly your
complimentary editorial regarding my book. You no doubt noticed
that I seemed to differ as to the mental attitude of the new set-
tler in Wisconsin, from such respectable writers as Rølvaag. I
referred to him as a cheerful and hopeful fellow, while R- de¬
scribes him as melancholy and sad. I might have referred to this
difference of view, but neglected to do so in my articles. I think
the difference in the surroundings of the barren prairie of the Da¬
kotas and the woodlands of Wisconsin may account for it. Of course
my account is based on boyhood impressions.
I may add that the publication is entirely in the hands of our
State Historical Society. I only furnished copy. I am a
member and a curator of the society.
