August 24, 1927.

Dear Mr. Hansen,

I hate to write to let you know that I do not

in any way mean to belittle the culture of the Middle

West, anything but we do nothing else but stick up

for the crude and agricultural middle west and try to

make people admit that it exists outside of buffalo stories

and Indians. But I still think that the Norwegian culture

they have is what they brought with them, not as yet much

flavored with the modern Norwegian ideas and all the rest,

which may or may not be a loss. You see in Norway I so

often noticed that when people told me of customs that had

been carried on by their parents, they were just the things

that we held up as typical of Norwegian culture and customs

of today. In reality we in the middle west are carrying

on and preserving customs and traditions which were common when

our grandparents came over. And that is a good thing, because

so much of that has been lost in Norway already.

By all means, greet Conrad when you write to him again.

I am glad that he is doing so well, not that that comes as

any surprise. He naturally would do well.

Yours, for the Middle West, what was it one of the Times

writers called it, "The hotbed of Nordie Culture?"

Best regards

Dikka Bortne
