WINNIPEG Febr. 15th. 1926.

Mr. Carl G. O. Hansen,

Minneapolis Tidende,

Minneapolis, Minn.

Dear Old Friend : -

I was glad to hear from you regarding Norway House,

since the recept of your letter I have succeeded getting in touch

with Mr. Watson, who is the historian of The Hudson's Bay Co., and

is at present working on a history of the company to be used at

the schools in Canada, incidentally he is an author with one or

two successful novels to his credit, I have met him in a social way

several times, and he was very accommodating. However he didnt

have a great deal of information in his Norway House file, but

loaned me the enclosed, which I promised to return.

I know a good deal about present conditions up

there, as I have been in charge of the estate left by Hans Christian

Hyer (HØIER), who went up there from Wisconsin over 50 years ago,

first as a prospector, he was a mining engineer, later he started

trading with the Indians and became in time a very successful and

formidable competitor of The Hudson's Bay Co, and owned at the

time of his death four trading posts, Norway House, Oxford House

Island Lake and Gods Lake, the three last are about 200 miles north

east from Norway House. The old man was a very intersting character

a real old Viking, fearless and with a reputation for square and

upright dealing with every one including the Indians, he never

married, and like a great many others who prefer to live alone, he

was very eccentric, during the last part of his life he was badly

crippled with rheumatism, and about a year before he died, he began

to try to locate relatives both in U. S. and Norway, and through

Aftenposten in Oslo, he got in touch with first cousin who had

written him a letter over 50 years ago, that Hyer never replied

to, it was through him that I first came in contact with Hyer, and

resulted in the sending of Leif Sunde, a first cousin of mine, up

to Hyer, and he will undoubtedly tell you his experienses, and what

he knows about the history of the place, he has successfully carried

on the business for the heirs since the old man died. I do not

believe that the name has anything to do with the early Norwegian

arrivals up there, the Anglican missionary Rev. Marshall, who has

been up there 16 years once told me that the Hudson's Bay Co.,

originally called it Northway House. Better wait until you hear

from Sunde, he is a young man interested in everything, who has

visited all the posts both by cance and dog team, and went up there

the first time in December, 200 miles by dog team over Lake Winnipeg

and has had a very intersting life up there ever since.

Leif Sunde came to Winnipeg from Flekkefjord about six years

ago, so he was almost a newcomer, when he tackled the job at

Norway House, you may remember meeting his father, when you were

in Flekkefjord, Johan Sunde a successful merchant there, he is my

mothers brother, but we are about the same age.

Please remember me to Mr. Guldbrandsen, we enjoyed his too

short visit very much, hope he and Mr. Waugh arrived home safely

We hope he will keep his promise to repeat the

med al sin "bagage"

visit, when I will have a chance to show him Winnipeg.

Expect to be in Minneapolis for a short business trip

early in June, and will of course come in and bother you as usual.

With kindest regards to you and all yours, also to han Johan og

Martha

I am writing Leif to tell you all he knows, he did send

an interesting accout of his experienses to the newspapaper in

Flekkefjord, some years ago. Please return the enclosed clipping

when you are through with it.

Sincerely yours

J.Villardson
