Dear Sir:
My Mother has written me several times about you,
and telling me that you were a School-mate of mine.
back in Trondhjem. My Mother has recently written
you in regards to a paper published in Stavanger
Norway called "Vestlands Posten". This paper was
published by Lars Oftedal at the time I attended
school there in 1881 and 1882. I had some photo's
of the school and its surroundings, but in the years
gone by these have become misslaid or lost.
I would very much like to have some pictures of
some kind of the school and the different places in
that city, but in spite of the fact that both Mother
and I have written to "Vaisenhuset" we have recieved
no reply. to our letters.
I would therefore very much like to have the
name of one of the Publishers of a Stavanger Paper,
in order that I might write to them in regard to
my desires.
I have by no means forgotten my mother lanquage,
but have had but little occasion to use it, and it is
very hard for me to write it. I think however that
it will be all right for me to write in English to
the parties back there for the information I want.
I can even notice in my Mothers letters the many
English words intermingled with Norwegian, and many times spelled in her over peculiar way. Were I to
times spelled in her own peculiar way. Were I to
attempt to write a letter in Norwegian, I am afraid
that you might publish it in the Comic Section.
I write to Mother regularly in English, and receive
answers in Norwegian. It is very interesting to receive
letters from her, because they are always filled with some
record or history of people or places she knows and remembers
so well.
I recently visited some people here in Oakland that came
from Trondhjem. The Lady's brother had made a return trip
back there some years ago, and while there took many pictures
of places of interest. He compiled these in a large Photo Album
and wrote quite a history in conection with them. This Man
was quite an Artist, and made a splendid volume of a
common Photo Album. He called it "Trondhjem The Cradle".
In looking it over I became inspired to try my hand
at a similar book. Not being able to have any Kodak
pictures taken by myself, I sent to Trondhjem to a relative
and received from her about 40 views. Many of them
were familiar to me, but some were of places erected since
I left. I have however sent most of them to Mother that
she might inscribe on their backs a brief history for my
record.
I was but 10 years of age when I left Trondhjem for
Stavanger, and returned again two years later to leave my
native city for America. I will however ever remember it
as my birthplace. I can picture in my mind "Bratøren"
and the beach on the Fjord where I learned to swim.
Will you kindly send me the name and adress of one
of the Publishers of a Stavanger paper.
