St. Paul
THEODORE CHRISTIANSON, GOVERNOR
August 2, 1927.
Mr. Carl G. O. Hanson
Editor, Minneapolis Tidende,
My dear Mr. Hanson:
This will acknowledge
receipt of your letter of July 30
containing your invitation to attend
the annual meeting of the Norwegian¬
Danish Press Association of America,
to be held at Duluth on August 26 and 27.
I would enjoy greatly
being with you on this occasion were it
possible, but under existing conditions
I must send my regrets. I shall leave
on August 26 for Buffalo, New York, to
attend the meeting of the American Bar
Association. This is an engagement of
two months standing and cannot be broken.
Kindly convey to the
members of your Association this expres¬
sion of my cordial appreciation of the
work its members are doing to preserve
Scandinavian culture in America, while
advancing the cause of true Americanism.
If America shall produce what we hope for,
the richest civilization that the world
has seen, it will be because it has assi¬
lated the best of every worthy culture
brought here from Europe. One-hundred
-percent Americanism is not synonymus
with know-nothingism. It places America
first, to be sure; but it recognizes
America as a child of Europe and an heir
of the ages.
While our branches send
forth their luxurient growth, let the
roots of the tree draw nourishment from
the soil of every land that has made a
worthy contribution to civilization and
ordered liberty.
Your very truly,
THEODORE CHRISTIANSON
