To the Norwegian - American Historical Association

Northfield, Minn.

Letters written by Hans Mathias Hansen (1832 - 1909) and his wife

Berthe Marie Osmundsdatter (1845 - 1917) at the farm Horntvedt in

the parish of Stokke, Vestfold, Norway, to their son Ludvig Horn-

tvedt, born 1868 in the parish of Stokke, emigrated to the United

States 1888, farming in Montana (Kalispell) from 1890. He passed

away 1946. He was married to Hilda Kristina Holst (1880-1959), who

was born and raised in Chipper Falls, Wisc. Her folk were both

from Norway. The couple had two daughters:

Anna (b. 1903), married to Henry Clerf, residing at Ellensburg, Wash.

and Helen (b. 1912), married to Tom Flynn, residing in Kalispell.

The two letters were among the property left by Ludvig Horntedt.

They are translated 1961 by pastor H.Chr. Mamen, Asker, Norway,

a nephew of Ludvig Horntvedt, who had the great privilege to visit

Kalispell, Montana, with his wife and five children July 1960.

Dear Ludvig

At your departure I was uneasy and it was not possible for

me to express the feelings of my heart. To-night I'm pondering again

and again on you, my beloved Ludvig. I have to write a short

letter, which you may bring with you to the distant country and

which I hope you will not despise.

I wish and I pray to God that he might protect thee and

bless thee and be with thee and give your enterprises to succeed.

I pray to that He may teach you to heed the councils and command-

ments of the Lord and obey Him. If so He has promised that good-

ness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives, and we

would not suffer want in any way. I'm sorry to say, many are neglecting to see the Lord,

I'm sorry to say, many are neglecting to seek the Lord,

while He may be found, to call upon Him while he is near, and in

that way loosing that good part. He has a peace to give, which

passeth all understanding. Godliness is great gain, having promise

of the life that now is, and of that which is to come and what is

a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own

soul? Dear Ludvig, be not sure or certain. We may not be certain

and confident any place except we as children have frankness to

name God our Father, believing the forgiveness of all our sins for

Jesus sake.

Please, dont be sorry because of my reminder of the one

thing, which is needful.

I repent very much not conversing with you more on this topic.

I have great responsibility towards my children, whom I am to

educate in discipline and admonition of the Lord that I might say

one day: "Lord, here I am and the children you gave me." Lord -

have mercy upon me. If you commence praying, please make inter-

cessions for us too.

Finally, flee all sinful manners, which ruin one, and

listen to and read diligently in the word of God. On Sunday you will

get time.

I hope sincerely you will get in touch with good and

Christian people. It might be of great benefit to you. May nothing

evil face you. And may you soon be at home again. I don't know

any other way than praying to God for help, being uneasy. So I do

because I'm depressed when you are leaving. Constantly I will be

anxious for you. However, nobody can help it. I recommend you to

the protection of the Lord. May he help us being at home bodily and

spiritually and give us to meet again in joy. Dont forget us? Please write us frequently we will be

Dont forget us. Please write us frequently. We will be

longing for every letter. We love thee highly. Thank you very much

beeing good and diligent in the home. I hope indeed you will behave

well among strangers. The Lord bless thee and keep thee, Farewell -

Farewell.

Your tender mother

BERTHE MARIE.
